Time to restore _iWUE (T_iWUE) (A–C) and limitation of _iWUE by g_s (g_s_limit_iWUE) (D–F) of the step change from high to low light (1500 to 100 μmol m^-2 s^-1 PPFD) assessed for eight wheat genotypes over three key stage of development (GS31, GS41, and GS71). Time to restore _iWUE was calculated with segmented regression, and estimated as the intercept between the two linear segments. The g_s at the two _iWUE intercepts was used to calculate the limitation of _iWUE by g_s by assuming an instantaneous stomatal closure after a high to low light transition. Data were analyzed by using two-way ANOVA [means separation was carried out with Duncan’s test (Supplementary Table 1)] and shown as means (n = 4–7).
