Participants Adults (n = 80) admitted to ICU with community‐acquired pneumonia and sepsis
Interventions
  • Hydrocortisone (intravenous loading dose of 200 mg over 30 minutes, followed by 300 mg in 500 mL 0.9% saline at a rate of 12.5 mg/h) for 7 days

  • Placebo (normal saline)

Outcomes PRIMARY
  • Improvement in PaO2:FiO2 (PaO2:FiO2 > 300 or ≥ 100 increase from study entry)


SECONDARY
  • SOFA score by day 8

  • Development of delayed septic shock

  • ICU mortality rate
