All animals including uninfected controls with exception of the eight denoted by an asterisk (*) were used for microRNA profiling.

Note that all five vehicle untreated (FT11-HD08) and only one out of eight vehicle treated (IH96-IV95) macaques showed colon histopathology. However, normalized microarray signal intensity and delta CT values for MNP2, also known as defensin alpha-2 (DEFA2) in Figure S1 showed significant upregulation of MNP2 in vehicle treated (IH96, HV48, IA24, JC81) and untreated (FT11, GH25, HB31, GA19, HD08) macaques suggesting vehicle treatment does not influence inflammatory gene expression in colon despite the absence of detectable histopathological lesions.
