Calculated conversion of superoxide anion to H2O2 via Si induced (a) and control (b) SOD-1 expression. The equilibrium reaction, O2 + 2H+ = H2O2, was used for the base equilibrium reaction, and the addition of ionic Si versus Cu was compared. The use of a mass action model with the valence state of the element used a variable for the rate of reaction. It was found that an increase from 2+ valence to 4+ valence was found to reach equilibrium concentration of the reaction by a factor of 4 (from 32 to 8 hr).
