Trial name or title	Effect of vitamin D supplementation in young South African children hospitalised with acute lower respiratory infection
Methods	RCT
Participants	Children aged from 1 month to 5 years, admitted to hospital with acute lower respiratory tract infection, i.e. bronchiolitis or pneumonia or both
Interventions	Vitamin D: 2500 IU daily from enrolment until hospital discharge
Outcomes	Primary: change from baseline in modified Respiratory Distress Assessment Instrument score at hospital discharge between intervention and placebo groups Secondary: duration of hospitalisation
