Exclusion criteria: cardiovascular and respiratory diseases (forced expiratory volume in 1 second < 50% of the predicted value and forced vital capacity < 50% of the predicted value), acute asthma exacerbation, obesity (body mass index > 40 kg/m2) and home oxygen therapy
Interventions Treatment group: tidal volume 6 mL/kg, PEEP 8 cmH2O (n = 24)
Control group: tidal volume 10 mL/kg, PEEP 0 cmH2O (n = 20)
