Lactation does not decrease BMD. Bone mineral density (BMD) as analyzed by a DEXA scan of lumbar spine (L2-4) and left and right femoral neck in 79 subjects subdivided into two groups: those who fed infants solely on breastmilk (BF) and those who fed infants artificial milk or a mix of both (Milk). Levels were compared at one month after partum between groups. Data represent mean levels of BMD ± SD (n = 34 for BF, n = 45 for Milk; NS not significant).
