Data were acquired using untreated skeletal muscle mitochondria thawed only once, except for complex I activity which requires three cycles of freeze‐thaw (Spinazzi et al., 2011). Assays were conducted at the species’ normal body temperature and normalized to mg of protein (a), or to the activity of citrate synthase (b).
