The structure of virion and the location of the thymidine kinase gene (UL23) in the HSV-1 genome. (A) The virion is mainly composed of four morphologically distinct structures. (B) HSV-1 genomes contain UL and US regions that are each flanked by terminal and internal inverted repeats (TRL/IRL and IRS/TRS). The UL23 gene is located between UL22 and UL24 in the UL regions in the same orientation as the UL22 gene and the opposite orientation from the UL24 gene.
