FIGURE 5

Recovered expression of mature neurons following Ibuprofen treatment in IUGR brains. (A) Representative immunofluorescent staining of mature neurons using the neuron-specific nuclear marker NeuN (green) in the parietal cortex. NG brains displayed robust NeuN expression throughout the parietal cortex with large plump neurons (see insert). In comparison IUGR brains (B) showed regions void of neurons (see arrowheads), and altered NeuN immunolabeling (insert). Ibuprofen treated IUGR show similar staining patterns to untreated NG (C). Scale bars = 100 μm for lower magnification images and 50 μm for high magnification inserts. (D) Quantification of cell counts found a decreased number of NeuN-positive labeled cells in IUGR compared with NG brains. IUGR+Ibu animals had higher NeuN-positive cells compared with untreated IUGR. For (D) n = 6 for each group. Values are presented as mean ± SEM. Two-way ANOVA with Sidak post hoc test (p < 0.05; ∗∗p < 0.005).
