The relation between anxious solitary excluded group membership and social helplessness in response to a social setback was mediated by observed upset during rejection. The beta indicating the ability of anxious solitary excluded group status to predict socially helpless responses to social setback was reduced to nonsignificance once observed upset during rejection was entered in the logistic regression model.
