Figure 1

Experimental setup for producing volumetric BH lesions in ex vivo bovine liver samples using Sonalleve V1 array transducer. Smaller volumetric lesions were produced by electronically steering the HIFU focus onto individual sites arranged as a central site and two concentric circles in two depth layers (see the insert on the right). A single BH pulse was delivered at each site within a layer, and then the sonication along the trajectory was repeated until each site received a total of 30 BH pulses. Spacing between trajectory sites was optimized such that the individual cavities (see example photo on top) would merge. The steering trajectory within each circle was arranged such that consecutive BH pulses were delivered to the sites furthest away from each other to minimize heat accumulation. Larger lesions were produced with four concentric circles and three depth layers.
