Both fetal macrophage populations express the LPS receptor TLR4. (a,b) E15 lung macrophages were immunolabeled with anti-TLR and analyzed by FACS. (c) TLR4-APC median fluorescence intensity (MFI) values measured TLR4 surface expression in each macrophage population. While CD11b^HI macrophages from E15 lung appeared to express higher levels of TLR4 compared to F4/80^HI lung macrophages, the relative expression of TLR4 in liver macrophage populations was similar (+/− s.e.m.; ***P < 0.001 compared to IgG isotype control, n = 4–6).
