Inclusion criteria: Plasmodium falciparum in peripheral blood smear; coma for at least half an hour (Glasgow coma score ≥ 6); no generalized seizure in previous 2 hours; exclusion of other causes of fever with altered consciousness
Exclusion criteria: diabetes; space‐occupying lesion; psychiatric illness; alcoholism; head injury; chronic renal failure
