Estimated cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNA levels are inversely correlated with the change in interferon (IFN) γ over time. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells from human immunodeficiency virus–infected, CMV-infected individuals (n = 40) were collected at 2 time points >12 months apart (times 1 and 2), and the frequency of cells producing IFN-γ (in spot-forming units [SFUs] per 105 cells) in response to CMVpp65 was determined by means of enzyme-linked immunospot assay, as in Figure 1.
