The following ideal levels were defined by the 2011 National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Expert Panel Guidelines: total cholesterol, less than 170 mg/dL; high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, greater than 45 mg/dL; non-HDL cholesterol, less than 120 mg/dL; triglycerides, less than 90 mg/dL; low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, less than 110 mg/dL; and apolipoprotein B, less than 90 mg/dL.20 All estimates are based on population-weighted data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The unweighted sample size ranges for each lipid and survey cycle are as follows: total cholesterol in 1999-2000, the minimum was 411 (females aged 6-11 years) and the maximum was 2930 (all youths); HDL and non-HDL cholesterol in 2007-2008, minimum of 481 (females aged 6-8 years) and maximum of 2055 (all youths); HDL, non-HDL, and total cholesterol in 2015-2016, minimum of 493 (males aged 6-11 years) and maximum of 2099 (all youths); triglycerides in 1999-2000, minimum of 429 (adolescents aged 16-19 years) and maximum of 904 (all adolescents); LDL cholesterol in 1999-2000, minimum of 424 (adolescents aged 16-19 years) and maximum of 892 (all adolescents); apolipoprotein B in 2005-2006, minimum of 413 (female adolescents) and maximum of 851 (all adolescents); triglycerides and apolipoprotein B in 2013-2014, minimum of 256 (male adolescents) and maximum of 532 (all adolescents); and LDL cholesterol in 2013-2014, minimum of 255 (male adolescents) and maximum of 531 (all adolescents).
