NK cells in HIV/SIV infections of humans (Left) and macaques (Right). Differential expression (Inline graphic increase, Inline graphic decrease) of NK cell markers indicative of defensive and effective anti-HIV/SIV functions (blue) are compared to virus-induced impaired (pink) functions. Overall, the balance of activating and inhibitory receptors is indicative of NK cell functionality and contribution to pathogenic outcomes.
