Schematic representation of a core–shell nanoparticle. The core functionality, such as drug encapsulation or a magnetic or plasmonic contrast enhancer, is protected by the polymer shell that provides colloidal stability. The shell is linked to the nanoparticle core by an anchor forming an irreversible chemical bond between the core and shell. Additional functionalities can be linked to the shell.
