Mitochondrial toxicity following exposure to various concentrations of CdCl2 in the presence of 25 mM glucose or 10 mM galactose. Cells were maintained in regular growth media until assayed. Cells were exposed to 0.01-100 μM CdCl2 for 4 h and the number of viable cells was estimated by MTT assay in the (A) HPNE and (B) AsPC-1 cells. Note the slight leftward shift in the curves for the 10 mM galactose group indicating a greater sensitivity to CdCl2 toxicity. Data are expressed as the means ± SEM of 12 assays (n=12) performed in duplicate and represent a composite of all assays analyzed by nonlinear curve fitting - single site inhibition analysis.
