Epigenetic modifications of a histone N-terminus. Lysine (K) residues are located at the N-terminal (gray) of histones: H2A, H2B, H3, and H4 (blue) and encircled DNA (black). They undergo posttranslational modifications such as acetylation (Ac) and methylation (Me). The numbers of amino acids refer to their position in the sequence of histones [36,104,105].
