Dietary patterns and modulation of the intestinal microbiome, immune, and nervous systems. Dietary patterns promote changes in the intestinal microbiome, affecting the production of bacterial metabolites that, in turn, modulate immune and nervous system functions, either increasing or decreasing the susceptibility for neurologic and psychiatric disorders. Western-style diets are related to increased inflammation, oxidative stress, dysbiosis, and metabolic abnormalities, whereas traditional Mediterranean and Asian diets are considered beneficial for human health [24,25,26,27,28,29,30,31].
