Evaluation of morphological changes and enterocyte vacuolization in the distal ileum of preterm lambs by H&E staining in control (A), UP-exposed (B), UP + carrier-exposed (C), and UP + sterol + carrier-exposed fetal lambs (D). Injury of the villi tips (arrows) was observed after 6 d UP exposure, which was prevented by carrier and/or sterol + carrier treatment. The size of the vacuoles within the enterocytes was increased in all experimental groups and most profoundly in UP + carrier and UP + sterol + carrier animals. Scale bar indicates 200 µm.
