The transition of hippocampal neurons from stages 1 through 3

Treatment t1/2(hr)
Stage 1 Stage 2 Stage 3
Control 18.6 21.9 (1.17) 30.0 (1.37)
C6-NBD-d-erythro-Cer 13.0 15.1 (1.16) 20.3 (1.34)
C6-NBD-d-erythro-Cer + d-PDMP 12.8 15.1 (1.18) 20.3 (1.35)

Data are taken from Figure 6. t1/2 was calculated for each stage from a slope obtained by linear regression analysis; in all cases, r2 was between 0.96 and 0.99. t1/2 stage 1 is the average time that 50% of the cells remain in this stage before entering stage 2. t1/2 stage 2 is the average time that it would take for 50% of the cells to accumulate in this stage. However, because stage 2 is an intermediate stage before transition to stage 3, this value is never reached; the slope for stage 2 therefore was obtained using data from the first 12 hr only.t1/2 stage 3 is the average time taken for 50% of the cells to enter this stage; note that because there were essentially no cells in stage 3 for the first 6 hr, the slope was obtained using data from 6 to 24 hr. The numbers in parentheses in the column labeled stage 2 are the ratiost1/2 stage 2/t1/2 stage 1, and the numbers in parentheses under stage 3 are the ratiost1/2 stage 3/t1/2 stage 2.
