A schematic model for reciprocal interaction of synaptic activity and NT-3 expression during synapse formation. During neuromuscular development presynaptic activity and consequent depolarization of the postsynaptic myocyte cause a specific increase in the levels of NT-3, which in turn feeds back on presynaptic terminals. Activation of presynaptic TrkC receptors potentiates synaptic transmission and promotes synaptic maturation.
