Absence of productive cycle HSV-1 gene expression in latently infected mice by in situ hybridization. Balb/c mice were stereotactically inoculated in the caudato-putamen with either 5 × 105 PFU of strain 1716 (3 mice, day 45, postinoculation) or 1 × 106 PFU of strain 17+ (3 mice, day 3, postinoculation). They were killed, and the brains were removed and processed as described in Materials and Methods.
