Time line and experimental design. Rats were trained preoperatively. After pump implantation, animals were tested twice in the DNMTP between day 10 and day 13 (POST 1) and between day 22 and day 24 (POST 2). Testing in IA was conducted only during POST 2 between day 26 and day 27. Because Alzet 2002 minipumps are functional only for 14 d, pumps were replaced on day 15. Animals were killed, and brains were processed for morphometric analyses after 28 d of continuous infusion.
