Survival rates of mice infected with the 17syn+ and ΔCTRL2 strains. A total of 125 mice were ocularly inoculated with 17syn+, and 120 mice were ocularly inoculated with ΔCTRL2. Mice were monitored daily through postinfection day 28 for signs of morbidity and for mortalities. Statistical analysis was done with SigmaPlot, version 12.5, using chi-square analysis for the number of surviving mice expected versus the number observed with 17syn+ infection (**, P < 0.005).
