Proposed models of mammalian mtDNA replication. Two alternative mechanisms of strand-asynchronous replication have been proposed: (A) the bootlace mechanism that relies on mature transcripts. (B) The strand-displacement model that depends on protein (mtSSB) to coat the displaced lagging-strand template.
