Model for FABP5 function in COPII-mediated large cargo trafficking. (A) During early stages of budding, FABP5 enhances SEC12’s GEF function, leading to enhanced GTP-loaded SAR1 on the membrane, and therefore high levels of membrane deformation. (B) During later stages of budding, FABP5 and SEC31 may lead to slower kinetics of SAR1 hydrolysis, allowing for cargo loading in a manner similar to TANGO1.
