KCl-triggered spreading depolarization (${\text{SD}}_{{\text{K}}^{+}}$) was initiated outside middle cerebral artery (MCA) territory (dashed line) when brain slices were harvested after 12 h of reperfusion following MCA occlusion (MCAo). Change in light transmittance (ΔLT) was imaged during superfusion of brain slices with 9.6 mM external K⁺. In this pseudocolored image, blue/yellow depicts increased ΔLT and cell swelling.
