Generative potential of adult brain parenchyma.

Parenchymal astrocytes and ependymal cells have been shown to have neurogenic potential. In the steady-state brain canonical notch signalling keeps these cells in quiescence. Insults, such as stroke can block notch signalling to activate the neurogenic potential of the parenchymal astrocyte and ependymal cells. Transplantation of neural precursors grown in vitro or derived from embryonic brain can undergo neurogenic differentiation in healthy and pathogenic adult brain.
