Segmentation can be ambiguous based on low-level cues. a, While the famous Dalmatian dog display is considerably more difficult to segment without knowing that there is a dog present, once one recognizes the dog, one also perceives it as a contiguous surface. b, The camouflaged owl seems impossible to segment based on local cues (red square, inset); but as one recognizes the owl, one can infer and perceive the boundary.
