(A) A typical growth curve as might be observed in a batch culture or biofilm is shown. Note that persistence first develops in a small subpopulation of cells during the mid-exponential phase of growth and is well established by the stationary phase. (B) The progression of a batch culture is shown, with tubes corresponding to the growth phases in part A. Upon transfer to fresh medium (or upon dispersal away from a biofilm), persisters encounter more favorable environmental conditions and can resuscitate to propagate a new population, analogous to the scenario in Figure 1.
