An arrow cue indicating the target of the upcoming electric stimulation was followed by an anticipation cue indicating the intensity of the upcoming electric stimulus: orange flash represents painful; blue flash represents nonpainful. After a fixed interval of 3500 ms, a delivery cue (duration = 1000 ms) was presented concurrently with stimulus delivery (duration = 500 ms): red flash represents painful; green flash represents nonpainful. Afterwards, affect ratings were collected in approximately one-third of all trials.
