The effect of orientation context on perceived contrast. The center gratings are identical in all three figures. The addition of an iso-oriented grating (left image) reduces the perception of contrast of the center grating whereas a surround that is rotated by 90° (right image) leaves perceived contrast unaffected or even enhances perceived contrast.
