Histopathological analysis supports severe neuroinflammation in the CNS of CX3CR1−/− mice. (A) Brain sections of CX3CR1+/+ and CX3CR1−/− mice were prepared and stained with H&E 5 days after JEV infection via footpad, intranasal, and intraperitoneal inoculation. Representative photomicrographs of the brain were obtained from blood vessel areas, meninges, and ventricles. (B) Detection of infiltrated CD11b+ myeloid cells in the brain. Brain sections prepared from CX3CR1+/+ and CX3CR1−/− mice were used for the detection of CD11b+ myeloid cells by staining with anti-CD11b mAb. CD11b+ cells were detected in cortical parenchyma area of the brain. Images are representative of sections (200×) derived from at least four mice. Interest areas infiltrated with leukocytes are denoted by black arrows.
