Alcohol preference (A) and alcohol consumption (B) on the model of two-bottle free-choice drinking is enhanced in homozygous mice with acid sphingomyelinase deficiency (ASM−/−) compared to wild type animals (wt). The levels of water intake (C) and total fluid intake (D) do not significantly differ between ASM−/− and wt mice. Stress (E) overwrites the differences in the drinking pattern of these animals.
