Schematic representation of the experimental task. The figure depicts examples of neutral (a), congruent (b), and incongruent (c) trials, when the target is a happy face. In each trial, the target face was displayed for 200 ms in the LVF. Concurrently, backwardly masked neutral, emotionally congruent, or emotionally incongruent faces were presented in the RVF. The stimulus/mask compounds consisted of fearful, happy, or neutral faces presented for 33 ms, immediately replaced by a neutral face (167 ms), to prevent conscious perception.
