Concentrations of chlorophyll a/carotenoids (A) and C-Phycocyanin (B) as a function of mica thickness, measured after exposure to UVB irradiation at 302 nm for 24 hrs. Concentrations of pigments were normalized to dry biomass. Positive controls, exposed to UVB for 24 hrs without any mineral protection, yielded no measurable levels of chlorophyll a or carotenoids (data not plotted). Zero thickness corresponds to no-mineral protection. Pigment concentrations of healthy cells (no UVB exposure) are plotted as dotted or dashed lines.
