The symbols + and − indicate, as a rule of thumb, the spectral region in which the factors listed in the first column are more or less favored. Concerning the instrument sensitivity, the gratings and optics can be optimized for working in different spectral regions; the detectors can cover the visible region up to approximately 1100 nm (silicon-based CCDs) or regions further to the red (InGaAs based arrays). Considering that silicon detectors are more common and less expensive than their InGaAs counterparts, the “Instrument sensitivity” has been assigned as more favorable in the visible region.
