Experimental paradigm. In a visual selective attention paradigm, subjects categorized the video clips as tools (e.g., hammer) or musical instruments (e.g., drum) while ignoring the concurrent congruent or incongruent sounds. The 2 × 2 × 2 factorial design manipulated the following: (1) visual reliability: intact versus degraded video clips; (2) auditory reliability: intact versus degraded sounds; and (3) semantic (in)congruency: incongruent versus congruent. For each condition, an audiovisual stimulus pair is represented by an image of the video clip and the waveform and time frequency spectrogram of the sound.
