Opposing selection pressures during transmitted founder HIV-1 transmission at mucosal surfaces. The within-host evolution creates a selection bias that leads to either viral restriction or establishes a new infection. Transmitted founder viruses are able to escape host restriction and are therefore responsible for establishing productive infection.
