Quantification of adiponectin levels in plasma and saliva of recombinant AAV-treated APN KO mice. After completion of brief-access lick testing, plasma (A) and saliva (B) adiponectin levels for each treatment group were measured by ELISA. Salivary adiponectin supplemented mice (red; A) had significantly lower levels of circulating adiponectin (P < 0.001) compared with C57BL/6J mice (black; A). Systemic adiponectin supplemented mice (blue; A) expressed significantly higher (P < 0.001), supraphysiological levels of circulating adiponectin relative to C57BL/6J mice (black; A). In the saliva however, neither the salivary (red; P = 0.08; B) nor systemically (blue; P = 0.09; B) supplemented mice had significantly different levels of salivary adiponectin than C57BL/6J mice (black; B). As expected, APN KO mice had no detectable levels of adiponectin in either the saliva or plasma.
