Transient expression of XopAP in N icotiana benthamiana leaves. (A) N icotianabenthamiana leaves were infiltrated with Agrobacterium expressing XopAP or a green fluorescent protein (GFP) control driven by the CaMV 35S promoter, and photographed at 5 days post‐inoculation (dpi). (B) Quantification of leaf bleaching by measurement of the chlorophyll content at 1, 3 and 5 dpi. (C) Cell death was quantified by measurement of electrolyte leakage at 1, 3 and 5 dpi. Values are the means ± standard error (SE) of five independent plants. Asterisks indicate a significant difference (Student's t‐test, P < 0.05) relative to the GFP control treatment. The experiment was repeated three times with similar results.
