Survival of wild‐type, Δatg8, Δatg1 and Δatg1Δatg8 Ustilago maydis cells during carbon starvation. Wild‐type, MN8.4 (Δatg8), MN12.4 (Δatg1) and MN81.5 (Δatg1Δatg8) cells were grown in liquid medium lacking a carbon source (MM – C). Cell aliquots were diluted and plated on potato dextrose agar (PDA) at the indicated times. Colonies were counted after 2–3 days and the percentage of survival was calculated on the basis of the initial colony number (day 0) for each strain.
