Mating reaction comparison of wild‐type and Δatg1Δatg8 Ustilago maydis strains. Five microlitres of overnight cell cultures of the indicated column and row strains (indicated by the number above and to the left) were spotted onto charcoal‐containing medium and dried in a transfer hood. Mating reactions were incubated at room temperature and photographed 24 h post‐inoculation. The production of white fuzzy colonies is indicative of successful mating reactions.
