Decreased expression of miR-125a-5p is associated with local recurrence and poor prognosis in advanced head and neck cancer. (A) MicroRNA microarray analysis from patient tumor samples collected from a prospective trial of postoperative radiation therapy [8], comprising of 77 evaluable patient samples, was performed, revealing an association of local recurrence (n = 25) with decreased miR-125a-5p expression, compared to patients with no evidence of disease (n = 52) (P = .0036). The data were analyzed with the Student's t-test and is presented as the mean ± standard error of the mean. (B) Kaplan–Meier estimates of survival based on miR-125a-5p expression level in head and neck cancer, based on miRNA expression analysis in The Cancer Genome Atlas. Low levels of miR-125a-5p in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma confers worse survival than high expression of miR-125a-5p (P = .006). Data was analyzed using OncoLnc (www.oncolnc.org) [9]. The data was analyzed using a log rank test.
