The polyol pathway in the heart. In the polyol pathway, aldose reductase (AR) converts glucose to sorbitol, which is subsequently oxidized to fructose by sorbitol dehydrogenase (SDH). AR also acts as an antioxidant enzyme by catalyzing toxic aldehyde to nontoxic alcohol.
