(a) RNA bases have been characterized by three edges—Watson–Crick, Hoogsteen (C–H edge for pyrimidines), and Sugar. (b) In principle, any edge of a base can interact with any other edge of a second base. Depending on the mutual orientation of the two glycosidic bonds, the base pair can be annotated as either cis or trans.
