Characterization of the hypothyroidism animal models. (A) Free thyroxine (T4) blood levels are almost undetectable after two weeks of either primary or central hypothyroidism. (B) Serum thyrotropin (TSH) levels were increased more than 10-fold in primary hypothyroidism but were undetectable in animals with central hypothyroidism. (C) Thyroid gland weight showed opposite changes in primary and central hypothyroidism after six weeks of induction. (D) Hematoxylin and eosin stained sections of the thyroid gland six weeks after induction of primary (pHT) and central hypothyroidism (cHT) also show opposite structural modifications.
